The two inflations, and why they diverge
There isn't one inflation number that matters to a café or takeaway. There are at least three, and they move differently.
- Headline inflation. All-items CPI was 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026 (ONS, released 21 October 2026).
- Retail food inflation, what your customers see in the shops. ONS put food and non-alcoholic drink prices up just 1.3% in the 12 months to September 2026, unchanged from August (same release).
- Menu-price inflation, the one you actually live with. Meaningful Vision's same-item tracker measured UK foodservice prices up 6.8% year on year in June 2026 (Meaningful Vision, published 7 September 2026). Its next update will show the months since.
How big is the gap? Compare the same month. In June 2026, foodservice inflation was 6.8% and ONS food and drink inflation was 1.7% (ONS, June 2026 release), which is the "four times" gap Meaningful Vision reports. Retail food inflation has fallen further since, to 1.3% in September, so if menu inflation has held up, the gap is now wider. ONS's own restaurants and hotels measure, which includes hotels, was 3.8% in September 2026.
That gap is the most useful number on this page. It says your costs are not rising like the shopping basket. What caterers pay for food and drink is part of it: the Foodservice Price Index from CGA by NIQ and Prestige Purchasing was up 2.7% on a year earlier in August 2026, and up 0.4% in that month alone (NIQ, published 24 September 2026). The rest of the gap is made of things retail food inflation doesn't count at all: wages, energy, rent, insurance and platform commission.
The compounding you already lived through
The Food and Drink Federation's reforecast notes that between January 2020 and July 2025, UK food and non-alcoholic drink prices rose 37% cumulatively, against 28% for overall inflation. For an operator, that five-year stretch did something subtle: it normalised frequent price changes. A café that repriced once a year in 2019 now reprices several times a year — and every one of those changes has to be repeated, by hand, on every delivery platform.
Three conclusions the headlines miss
- 1. Commission scales with your prices. Commission is a percentage of the menu price, so when you raise prices to keep up with costs, the pounds you pay your platforms rise with them. If menu prices rise 5% on a platform taking a quarter of the order in commission, the platform's take rises 5% too. That is how a percentage works rather than a hidden fee, but few operators budget for it.
- 2. Stale prices cost more when inflation is high. Every week a platform menu lags your till is a week it sells at an old price. With foodservice prices rising around 7% a year, a menu three weeks stale is selling at last quarter's price: a fraction of a percent of that platform's revenue, small per week, permanent if nobody owns the update.
- 3. The wedge is where your margin went. With retail food inflation at 1.3%, "ingredients got expensive" is no longer the main story for a coffee shop. If you want to see what that means for your own margin, our café profit margin guide works through it. Energy, labour and commission — your fixed and semi-fixed overheads — are. Which means the response isn't just repricing; it's repricing actively, with your overheads in view (see our guide on pricing and overheads).
