The headline number, and why it flatters you

ONS put UK food and non-alcoholic drink inflation at 1.3% in the 12 months to September 2026, unchanged from August, after prices fell 0.2% in the month (ONS, released 21 October 2026). If you only read the headline, you'd think ingredient costs have calmed down. For a household, they largely have.

For a café or takeaway, the retail number is the wrong index. The Foodservice Price Index from CGA by NIQ and Prestige Purchasing, built from what caterers actually buy, was up 2.7% on a year earlier in August 2026 and 0.4% in that month alone. Its August release singled out sugar, meat and poultry, milk, cheese and eggs, and oils and fats as categories under pressure (NIQ, published 24 September 2026). And the menu prices operators charge rose 6.8% year on year in June 2026, on Meaningful Vision's same-item tracker (published 7 September 2026).
